Fic Notes: Dramaturgy

Updated: Mar 11, 2022

Wei Ying always thought he’d make an excellent isekai protagonist. But because of his terrible luck stat, rather than being transported into some high fantasy realm full of knights and cute elven princesses, he finds himself stuck inside his little sister’s favorite BL novel instead. Even with his physics-breaking OP protagonist cheat powers, he still has to find a way out of this mess while staying as far (and platonically) away from the opposite male lead as possible.

So in this Wei Wuxian/Lan Wangji MDZS transmigration AU fic Wei Ying's powers are basically the internet and javascript. He's got the power of google at his fingertips and a developer portal app that can interact with the world around him using scripts. This works out great for him, since he just so happens to be that one kid in your high school year book who was voted: most likely to end up on the FBI watchlist for hacking the IRS website just to put a 'Dick's out for Harambe' meme on the front page.

Wei Ying's Character Design:

Wei Ying's backstory is actually based heavily by one of my good friends from college who was born in the US and moved to Shanghai in high school and attended an international school there. I'm not Chinese and have never been there/ watched any C-dramas and the lift it would take to have him be just a regular high schooler and get all the cultural subtleties right was just too much research than I was willing to put in.

Personality wise he's a fairly pretty regular Gen-Z kid - incredibly technologically savvy, plays a lot of video games, could probably get off his phone more, and has the sort of clever and casually irreverent personality that makes him very popular both in person and on social media. On the otaku scale of "I watch shounen anime and have a crunchyroll account" to "Born again weeb who spends 70+ hours on Visual Novels and exclusively watches V-tubers" Wei Ying is probably closer to the former. He's a good balance between the cute and popular school delinquent and the kid in class who does the Naruto run at recess.

He has one little sister who is actually is step sister, Meilin. I refuse to give her an age because I know I'll forget it, so let's just say she's in middle school. She's obsessed with The Untamed and Lan Wangji in particular. His father is an international businessman that he sees like once in a blue moon, who probably has a mistress or two in Hong Kong and Beijing that Wei Ying doesn't know and doesn't care to know about. His stepmom and his father got married more because of pressure from her wealthy family than any real desire to do so. She spends as much time back in her hometown of Chongqing as she can get away with. His relationship with his father is basically nonexistent, but still unpleasant. He lowkey resents him for divorcing his mom and making him move to China. He and his stepmom are pretty amicable. They more or less stay out of each other's way and are distant but polite. He likes his little step sister a lot but has a hard time connecting with her since their personalities and interests are so different. He's never had any other siblings so he doesn't really know how to handle her. For her part, Meilin has always liked the idea of an older brother, even though Wei Ying is kind of a nerd and a slob.

As for his sexuality... well. Let's just say the jury's out. Ostensibly he's always thought himself as straight, has his favorite anime waifus and idols, but really just hasn't given it any thought. As opposed to the actual Wei Wuxian, whom I would consider a bisexual disaster on a good day, Wei Ying is actually, mostly, straight. I would say like 80-20? As in, he'd probably go gay for Tom Holland (or Lan Wangji lol but don't tel him that), but that's about where the line is drawn. LWJ's got his work cut out for him with this guy.

He's also got great taste in music!! (If I do say so myself, lol.) He mainly listens to lo-fi, electronic, chillwave kind of stuff. He also likes j-pop-, j-rock, k-pop and classics like Britney Spears haha.

Why all his usernames are Yeezy:

First, he's a big Ye fan. Secondly, his username in a lot of online games is Yizhi (一直) which in my garbage translation abilities can be translated as 'always doing something'. It can also mean 'straight' which, lol.

Isekai Super Powers:

Basically, Wei Ying transmigrated like a video game protagonist. He has a home instance that automatically populates with all the items from his room IRL, that he can travel to and from. he can also bring objects in and out of it. The pocket dimension operates in a weird parallel-space kind of way; it's an overlap over his current dimension, which in laymans terms just means if he enters his home instance and walks into his bathroom, if he exits from the bathroom he'll have traveled that exact distance in the MDZS world as well. This is mostly a bizarre quirk than an actual intentional superpower, but also very useful (re: being trapped or locked up and needing to get out). Time in his home instance also passes in the same manner as the MDZS world.

(Bizarrely enough, he's got better cell service in MDZS than he ever did in Shanghai. But time between the MDZS world and the real world moves reeeally slowly. In short, though he can access the internet and get into petty fights on twitter with all the Wangxian stans, the time difference makes things like phone calls or online gaming impossible. What seems like days to him is only a minute or so in the real world.

IMO the internet is in and of itself a superpower. If I got stranded in a random fandom world, google is the only thing I'd like to bring. He's basically got the answer to everything. In addition, The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation exists in his world so he can read the book and get an idea for what's in store for him.)

But his actual superpower is his weird ability to access the source code of the world around him and interact and change it in the developer interface on his phone. The scripts he makes print out as talismans in the MDZS world, and can be activated whenever he wants them to be.

For now he's still in beginner story mode so his functions are pretty limited.

I also don't want to get *too* into the granular details of the functions and how they work since I feel like it'll detract from the story too much. But at the same time as a writer I need it fleshed out to know what's possible.

function import();

Imports things from the current world into his home instance. Pretty basic. The key here is that he can either do it directly by physically interacting with something - grabbing the Collection of Turmoil out of the library and stashing it in his desk drawer - OR he can define an object class and use the import function to place it in his home instance without directly interacting with it. In this manner, he could just define something by its properties (object.bunny - small, round, fluffy, alive, male) and then move that object with the import tool. This is ridiculously OP, since he can basically make things disappear from the world at will.

function export();

Basic function that takes things from his home instance and places them in the MDZS world. In the first few chapters WY only really uses this to drink inadvisable amounts of redbull from his endless supply of it, but the implications are just as broad as the import function. It gets reeeally OP in combination with the create function.

function move();

A main function that can move defined objects from one set of coordinates to another on the x,y,z planes of a map. In essence, he can define an object and then yeet the whole thing. He uses this seemingly basic function to great effect in chapter 6, when he defines the Waterborne Abyss as its own object by using its properties of resentful energy, and then literally chucks it out into space (long live the z plane!!). He also uses it to magically conjure up the iconic pair of bunnies for Lan Wangji in the library.

function inspect();

A main function which inspects objects that already exist. In essence this allows WY to get all the specs of an object already existing in the MDZS world. WY uses this to inspect the water ghouls and uses the information he gets back to group them up and define that group as an object class to then punt it into space. It's the 'get info' button of the world.

function bookmark();

A main function that saves objects in the MDZS world. It might seem like just a convenience, but being able to save features makes it easy to build on them. For example, using the bookmark and move functions, WY can 'bookmark' certain places in the world and then use the move function to travel between them instantaneously. Long live the fast travel button!

function create();

A main function WY gets from leveling up during his roaming in chapter 7 (not that he knows much about the leveling up yet). While he's been able to define objects that already exist in MDZS and his home instance, he hasn't been able to make new things.

function println();

Another basic function that's more powerful than it first appears. This feature allows him to print his scripts as talismans instead of just immediately running them out of his developer environment. This has the bonus of timing, as he can write the code, print it, and then activate the talisman at a later date. He can also give other people the ability to use his powers this way - like writing a teleportation script for Jiang Cheng and then leaving it for him to activate when he thinks it's necessary.
